ControlNet

The ControlNet protocol is a globally accepted industrial networking standard (IEC 61158) that was specifically designed to meet the real-time, high-throughput requirements of an industrial network. A key characteristic of ControlNet is its deterministic, repeatable transfers of all mission-critical control data while also supporting non time-critical data transfers on the same physical wire. Non time-critical applications such as program downloads can occur over ControlNet without affecting the real-time performance of the network.

ControlNet uses the highly efficient Producer/Consumer model for network access. Nodes that have data to transmit, produce a data packet with a data identifier onto the network. All nodes connected to the network then consume the data packet and determine — based on the data identifier — whether they are configured to further process the data. This allows a single produced data packet from a single node to be consumed by multiple nodes without requiring multiple transmissions — a feature referred to as multicast).

ControlNet is well suited to be the backbone network for both control of I/O data and messaging of information. It supports RG6 coax and fiber (including ring) options, IP67 media options, media redundancy, options for intrinsically safe environments, and products that provide processor redundancy.

Building upon several decades of constant innovation and global market leadership in industrial fiber optic networking, NSPI has created the most robust line of ControlNet Fiber Optic Self-Healing Ring and Dual Self-Healing Ring repeaters that are currently available. In addition, we provide ControlNet repeaters for Point-to-Point, Daisy Chain, Star and Cascading Tree topologies.

Overview

EOTec 2000 (2C20) ControlNet Fiber Optic Repeaters for Point-to-Point, Daisy Chain, Star and Cascading Tree Applications (PDF)

The modular EOTec 2C20 Electrical Interface Module is designed for use with various Optical Interface Modules and Power Supply Modules within the EOTec 2000 product family. Various combinations of modules can be used to create many different network topologies using coax cable or glass fiber cable. Topologies supported include Point-to-Point, Daisy Chain, Star and Cascading Tree.

Fiber Optic Receivers (FOR)

Overview

The EOTec 2C31 Single Self-Healing Ring (SHR) and 2C32 Dual Self-Healing Ring (DSHR) repeaters provide multiple communication paths between the various elements of the control system and incorporate advanced Downstream Multicasting technology. In the event of a failure on one communication path, communications are still maintained along a secondary path or, in the case of a dual ring, tertiary paths.

Downstream Multicasting transmits an incoming message in multiple directions and insures that while directing the message toward all nodes in the ring it is never retransmitted back to the point of origin. This communication method employs a “Master” or ring control module which will direct traffic and guard against duplicate message delivery. Process downtime due to an accidental break of one of the fiber cables is therefore eliminated.

Powerful local and remote diagnostic tools are incorporated into both the 2C31 and 2C32 to enhance reliability and support preventative maintenance. These address power input quality, optical fiber fault, location of optical fiber break and link status. Data on the optical fiber lines is constantly monitored. If a fiber fails to transfer light or is broken an alarm is instantly activated.

These repeaters support the highest number of nodes and deliver up to 60% more optical power than competing models, resulting in the ability to have longer transmission distances between nodes.
